The Role of a Trainee Recruitment Consultant

The role of a Trainee Recruitment Consultant offers the opportunity to work in a sophisticated sales environment where utilisation of personal and professional qualities will result in a role which delivers a constant challenge, strong interaction with clients and candidates, excellent financial rewards and career progression.
 
The disciplines covered by Recruitment are wide; depending on personality, skills, experiences and approach to sales. Trainee Recruitment Consultants have the opportunity to work in specific industry sectors and recruit at all levels within that sector.

Basic starting salaries will be dependent upon geographical location, the amount of previous Business to Business sales experience that you possess and the overall potential that the employer feels an individual has to make an impact within that organisation.  Basic starting salaries will range between £18,000 – £25,000 dependent on experience, which will be enhanced by Commission.  Average first year-earnings for Trainee Recruitment Consultants is subject to the individuals’ desire to perform beyond target expectations or once a percentage of your billings has been achieved (this is called a threshold). 

The role of a Trainee Recruitment Consultant is a business to business sales-based role and a typical day will involve large amounts (4-5 hours) of cold calling and business development of both new and existing clients.

Candidate Management will also be an integral part of the day of a Trainee Recruitment Consultant.  Consultants will going out to meet and present to clients face to face, vetting CVs, interviewing candidates, composing candidate CVs, arranging interviews, preparing candidates for interviews with your clients, and keeping your systems, administration and database up to date.

Client Management and Development will also make up a portion of the day of a Trainee Recruitment Consultant.  Consultants will be expected to develop both new and existing business as well as attend client visits and undertake presentations. 

Typical hours in Recruitment can be long and demanding; on average, the hours you could work each day will be 8.30am - 6.00pm but flexibility is required.  You could have a candidate in at 8am, or a client to call at 7pm, or perhaps even a telephone interview to do outside of office hours - you need to be adaptable and open minded to the hours that you could work.  There may also be the need to attend client or company functions in the evenings.

Training will be an integral part of the first 6 months of any Trainee Recruitment Consultant.  Training within the recruitment industry has a reputation for being thorough but will stand you in good stead once you begin working on a desk.

The training itself will vary dependant on the organisation you join but as a Trainee Recruitment Consultant you can expect both classroom-training sessions and on the job training. Some companies have an internal training department and the focus of Training will come generally from this department.  However, many companies employ external training for Trainee Recruitment Consultants as this type of training can produce new ideas and procedures for Trainees to use.

If the company belongs to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) they will put you through a recognised Foundation Award in Recruitment Practice which will help you to understand the recruitment marketplace more comprehensively.
